NHL Shelves Realignment (For Now)

This is interesting.  From Hockey Tickets Online:

“It is unfortunate that the NHLPA has unreasonably refused to approve a plan that an overwhelming majority of our clubs voted to support, and that has received such widespread support from our fans and other members of the hockey community, including players,” NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said.

Also in the article a bit further down is a comment from Joe Pavelski of the Sharks about what the hang up was for the players:  playoffs and travel schedule.

Taking division games (or conference games if you prefer) away in exchange for guaranteeing a home and home for each team was silly to begin with.  If it means having more games against teams in my division or conference, I’m fine with only seeing Corey Perry or Anze Kopitar in town once every other year.

However, as you’ll hear me say many times: when the deal is sweet enough, they’ll take it.  If realignment doesn’t happen in 2012-13, it’ll happen in 2013-14.  There’s too much at stake for it not to happen.
